Program Description

Self-Care: An Essential Practice for Peer Recovery Specialists

(Other Behavioral Health Professionals & Coaches Welcome!)

Self-care is an essential component to maintaining and sustaining recovery and wellness. As peer recovery specialists, committing to our own ongoing practice of self- care becomes an essential tool for our professional work in the field of behavioral health.

Through self-care practice we can cultivate a person-centered and strengths- based approach to recovery and wellness as well as a foundation for handling the many challenges of life and work in recovery.

This foundation also supports creating a recovery positive environment — as peers practicing self-care, we become role models and mentors for recovery and wellness as a way of life for our communities and those we serve.

In this educational and experiential training, we will explore:

  • What self-care is and why it is an essential practice for peer recovery specialists

  • Challenges to self-care related to serving in peer recovery roles

  • Red flags and warnings signs that self-care is at risk

  • How self-care practice applies to all of the peer recovery domains including advocacy, mentoring and eduction, recovery and wellness, and ethics

  • A holistic approach to recovery and wellness focused on body, mind, emotion and spirit

  • Self-care tools that support self-awareness, balance and well-being including experiential practices such as meditation & mindfulness, yoga, journaling and other tools that can be utilized personally or with the peers and communities we serve

  • Different ways to develop and work with a self-care plan as well as integrate enhanced self-care practice into an existing recovery and wellness plans

This course is designed to support peer recovery specialists in cultivating self-care for resilience and sustainablity.

A section of the content focuses on specific challenges to self-care for peer recovery specialists however the majority of the program can support any behavioral or health care practitioner and/or health or wellness coach in developing a strong foundation in self-care. All are welcome.

ABOUT HOLISTIC RECOVERY PATHWAYS

Holistic Recovery Pathways offers person-centered, transformational, strengths-based programs and educational training and resources to promote and support Addiction, Mental Health & Trauma Recovery.

At the heart of a holistic approach is the idea that each person’s process of change and healing is unique — this supports a “multiple pathways of recovery” approach and offers many possibilities for support.

This project emerged through founder Beth Shekinah Terrence’s work over three decades as a holistic health & wellness practitioner as well as from her own journey as a person in recovery from addiction, trauma, and fibromyalgia.

She ultimately found holistic approaches were what empowered her to build and sustain long-term recovery. Today, she is passionate about sharing what she has learned with others!

Holistic Recovery Pathways is committed to providing awareness and access to holistic resources and wellness programs that support individuals, families and communities in building recovery, well-being, and resilience.

We are committed to bringing holistic recovery approaches to support recovery-focused organizations in integrating holistic approaches into their programs, supporting clients and staff in recovery and well-being, and promoting their overall success and sustainability.

Since 2015, we have been bringing programming to support peer recovery workforce development and are an authorized CE provider for peers in Maryland through MABPCB.
